Plate Modeling and Who Uses It
Modeling plate tectonics can be a powerful tool for reconstructing or predicting geological environments throughout the Earth’s history. This tool has been especially useful to groups engaged in exploration for hydrocarbons or minerals on global and regional scales.
PaleoGIS and Plate Modeling
PaleoGIS provides a way to carefully document the location and timing of global and regional plate tectonic reorganization events. PaleoGIS is a rigorous, integrated digital reconstruction technique designed to make it easy for a modeler to define plates, incorporate geological and geophysical data, and make tectonic reconstruction maps. Once a model has been authenticated by the modeler, it can become the foundation for further stratigraphic, paleogeographic, paleoclimatic, paleobiogeographic, resource, and geodynamic investigations.
PaleoGIS is an extension to ArcGIS from ESRI that enables you to incorporate geologic time into your GIS. With PaleoGIS, you can visualize your own data in a plate tectonic and paleographic context.
With PaleoGIS You Can:

Requirements
- Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, or 7
- ArcGIS 9.3.1 or 10.0 (w/ appropriate service pack and .Net framework)
- ArcGIS Spatial Analyst (for raster reconstructions only)
PaleoGIS Data
- PaleoGIS ships with a demo plate model provided by Christopher R. Scotese of the PaleoMap Project. This is a demo dataset only. The plate model allows reconstructions to be made back to 50 million years ago. To purchase complete plate models, please contact Christopher Scotese at cscotese@gmail.com.
- PaleoGIS also ships with a demo of the University of Texas Institute of Geophysics UT PLATES plate model. For information please contact Lisa Gahagan at plates@utig.ig.utexas.edu
- Many other plate models have been imported into PaleoGIS on a proprietary basis. We can help you import your plate model into PaleoGIS.

This release primarily focuses on improving support for raster reconstructions, but there are over 34 enhancements and fixes total. We recommend you upgrade as soon as possible if you are currently using PaleoGIS 4.0.2. This release resolves a critical issue with the context menu options in PaleoGIS 4.0.2. We recommend you upgrade as soon as possible if you are currently using PaleoGIS 4.0 because the performance will be much better using the default software configuration. | PaleoGIS.com Moved to New Server!!! - Monday, November 29, 2010 The PaleoGIS Website and License Server have been moved to a new powerful computer. It could take up to 24 hours for the DNS settings to propagate around the world so please be patient if the website seems a little unresponsive for a day or two. Also, let us know if you experience any problems obtaining licenses from within PaleoGIS.

| PaleoGIS 3.3.1 BETA for ArcGIS 10 is now available for testing! - Monday, September 20, 2010 A *BETA* version of PaleoGIS 3.3.1 for ArcGIS 10 is now available for testing. This release includes the same features as version 3.3 for ArcGIS 9.3.1, but it is intended to run in conjunction with ESRI's newest version of ArcGIS called version 10. A substantial amount of effort was needed to upgrade to ArcGIS 10. Please feel free to download this BETA and provide feedback if you find any issues that we may have missed. The official production release will follow in the next few weeks.

| PaleoGIS 3.3 has been released! - Monday, September 14, 2009 PaleoGIS 3.3 is now available for ArcMap 9.3.1. This release is primarily intended to support ArcGIS 9.3, but it also includes a number of enhancements. Major improvements have also been made to the raster reconstruction algorithm, making it more efficient and reliable. New functionality has been added to the animation preview window allowing users to pause, scroll, and loop through animations. Also, make sure to take a look at the updated User's Manual by pressing the help button in PaleoGIS.

It includes new features and is the most stable and user friendly version of PaleoGIS yet.
