It is packed with fixes, performance enhancements, and several important new features – all based on your feedback to PaleoGIS 3.0. If you have paid for a license to PaleoGIS but have not received an email explaining how to download and install this new version, please email us at PaleoGIS(at)rothwellgroup.com

The academic version of PaleoGIS is now available. - Monday, October 22, 2007
A scaled down version of PaleoGIS is now available to academic institutions only. This version includes the core functionality used to perform reconstructions and animations, but does not include the Analysis Toolbar and Plate Moving Functions Toolbar. For more information regarding the academic version of PaleoGIS please contact Christopher Scotese at info@scotese.com. If you would like to order a copy, please fill out the PaleoGIS Academic Version Order Form here and either mail or email it to info@scotese.com

PaleoGIS 3.0 Release Date Will Follow ESRI ArcGIS 9.2 Service Pack 3 Release - Saturday, July 21, 2007
We have made the decision to postpone the release of the new version of the PaleoGIS until ESRI releases Service Pack 3 for ArcGIS 9.2.  It will be important to test functionality and stability in that environment.  ESRI says they will release Service Pack 3 "in July". Take a look at the ESRI service pack 3 information by clicking "read more" below. read more ...

Release of the PaleoGIS Upgrade Wizard - Thursday, July 19, 2007
The PaleoGIS upgrade Wizard is designed to handle all the extra bookkeeping involved when a user upgrades their version of the PaleoGIS. The PaleoGIS is a highly flexible and customizable extension, and every user site has configured it in a slightly different way. This makes it extremely complex to build all the configuration upgrade steps into the installer program, thus the reason we developed the “PaleoGIS Upgrade Wizard”. This wizard walks the user thru the entire upgrade process, and tries to account for all the various configuration scenarios that a user site might have.  Please see the downloads section of this site to obtain the Wizard.

Plate Modeling and Who Uses It

Modeling plate tectonics can be a powerful tool for reconstructing or predicting geological environments throughout the Earth’s history. This tool has been especially useful to groups engaged in exploration for hydrocarbons or minerals on global and regional scales.

PaleoGIS and Plate Modeling

PaleoGIS provides a way to carefully document the location and timing of global and regional plate tectonic reorganization events. PaleoGIS is a rigorous, integrated digital reconstruction technique designed to make it easy for a modeler to define plates, incorporate geological and geophysical data, and make tectonic reconstruction maps. Once a model has been authenticated by the modeler, it can become the foundation for further stratigraphic, paleogeographic, paleoclimatic, paleobiogeographic, resource, and geodynamic investigations.

PaleoGIS is an extension to ArcGIS from ESRI that enables you to incorporate geologic time into your GIS. With PaleoGIS, you can visualize your own data in a plate tectonic and paleographic context.

With PaleoGIS You Can:

  • Create, display, analyze and manipulate plate tectonic data models
  • Incorporate your own plate data and paleographic context
  • Add your own data to the map
  • Enjoy simplified parent-child plate relationship management
  • Perform plate velocity and spherical directional analysis
  • Incorporate your own analysis tools
  • Perform plate movement animations

PaleoGIS 3.0 Highlighted Features:

  • New layer and dataframe context menus
  • New analysis tools
  • Support for many ArcGIS 9.2 features
  • Significant performance and stability enhancements
  • Support for additional data types

Requirements

  • Microsoft Windows XP or 2000 Professional
  • ArcGIS 9.1 or 9.2 (w/ appropriate service pack and .Net framework)
  • ArcGIS Spatial Analyst (for grid processing)
PaleoGIS Data

PaleoGIS comes with a demo plate model provided by Christopher R. Scotese of the PaleoMap Project. This is a demo dataset only. The plate model allows reconstructions to be made back to 50 million years ago. To purchase complete plate models, please contact Christopher Scotese at info@scotese.com
