PaleoGIS Now Supports Geognostics Earth Model

We are pleased to announce that Geognostics has joined The Rothwell Group’s family of plate model vendor partners. The Geognostics Earth Model (GEM™) developed by Chief Geologist Jon Teasdale, is fully supported by PaleoGIS and was introduced at SEAPEX 2017.

Geognostics is an innovative exploration services company focussed on leveraging GEM™ to understand global tectonics and predict basin geology from the bottom-up. The GEM plate model builds on Geognostics’ global structural framework and basement terrane maps. Leveraging PaleoGIS, GEM can be used to precisely correlate basement and basin features from one conjugate margin to another, including structures, wells, petroleum play elements and seismic data. GEM is available by global subscription, through GEM ‘Movie Tickets’, or as a base for innovative consulting projects.

The partnership with Geognostics is directly in line with Rothwell’s strategy to provide our users with the widest possible choice of models and associated data.  As the industry standard plate tectonics reconstruction modeling platform, PaleoGIS supports the leading commercial and academic plate models available on the market today.

Rothwell’s Paleo products provide a robust suite of plate tectonic analysis tools that enable exploration geologists and GIS professionals to dynamically visualize, characterize, and understand basin and play development resulting in lower costs, more flexible decision making and greater accuracy.

PaleoGIS Supports ArcMap 10.4 and 10.4.1, with Improved Deformation Capabilities

PaleoGIS supports ArcMap 10.4, 10.4.1 with improved deformation

PaleoGIS and PaleoRun for ArcMap 10.4 and 10.4.1

New PaleoGIS functionality includes improved deformation capabilities.

We are pleased to announce that both PaleoGIS and PaleoRun versions 4.3 are now available for ArcMap 10.4 and 10.4.1, with improved deformation capabilities. Installers can be downloaded from our website (Support > Downloads). Version 4.3 for ArcGIS 10.3 and 10.3.1 will be available in the near future.

New Features in Version 4.3
  • Deformation method deforms user vector data, in addition to plate model layers
  • Deformation Assistant tool simplifies implementing deformation
  • Point Path Visualization tool allows selection of analysis point by clicking on map
  • Instantaneous Motion outputs can be added to animations
  • Age drop-down menu includes numeric age ranges for geologic ages
  • Label options include ability to set label location and left-align or center text
About Deformation Functionality

Deformable models that implement the new PaleoGIS v4.3 deformation method can deform both user vector data and the plate model layers during reconstructions, improving the ability to visualize geologic evolution without the inherent limitations of rigid models and data. Implementing this method does not require changes to the model’s plate polygons. Instead, the deformation control is stored in separate feature classes within the model database. Further, this method provides fine-grain control of the deformation process, allowing multiple deformation events for individual plates at different ages. The Deformation Assistant tool makes it easy to add or edit deformation in your model, and it allows changes to be made in the present day or reconstructed reference frames. Existing rigid models are still supported in v4.3, with no change in format, and deformation can be disabled for deformable models easily if desired.

About PaleoRun

Frequently, geoscientists and GIS professionals need to run batch reconstruction jobs in order to process large amounts of data. With PaleoRun, users can create batch jobs that include reconstructions, Instantaneous Motion and/or Point Path Visualization. PaleoRun can be launched manually or scheduled to run—at regular intervals, overnight or over weekends—using Windows Task Scheduler.

As with existing versions, PaleoGIS and PaleoRun v4.3 support most commercial and academic plate models. Please contact Sales@RothwellGroup.com for more information.

Plate Tectonics “Father,” Alfred Wegener, Remembered at NAC+ 2016

Dr. Denis M. Schlatter of Helvetica Exploration Services GmbH remembers Alfred Wegener (1880–1930)

Alfred Wegener was a German polar researcher, geophysicist and meteorologist. However, today he is most remembered as the originator of the theory of continental drift, having hypothesized in 1912 that the continents are slowly drifting around the Earth. His theory led later researchers to build on his work and form the basis of the plate tectonics model which accurately describes the large-scale motion of the Earth’s crust and upper mantle.

Check out the insightful account of Wegener and his contribution to modern geology in this paper by Dr. Denis M. Schlatter, for the North Atlantic Craton 2016 conference earlier this year: Remembering Alfred Wegener (1880–1930): Greenlandic and Polar explorer and the father of plate tectonics To see Dr. Schlatter’s supplementary poster with the same title, click here.
