Royal Holloway Research Uses PaleoGIS

Reconstruction of India, Australia and Antarctica's breakup from Gondwana

Reconstruction of India, Australia and Antarctica’s Breakup from Gondwana

We are pleased to share with you a reconstruction animation created using PaleoGIS by Dr. Lloyd White of Royal Holloway, University of London’s Department of Earth Sciences (Royal Holloway). Dr. White included this reconstruction in his presentation at the The Roberts Conference: Passive Margins 2016 (Roberts Conference), held at Royal Holloway April 6–8. The conference explores the role of mechanisms such as “depth-dependant and differential stretching through the lithosphere, polyphase deformation, magmatic activity, and the interplay between structure and sedimentation in rift and passive margin development.” (See Event Details at GlobalEventsList.elselvier.com)

Dr. White’s presentation focused on the tectonic evolution of Gondwana and geological record of breakup along the Indian, Australian and Antarctic passive margins.

The plate model illustrated in the reconstruction was developed by Dr. White and follows work presented in White et al., (2013) “A reassessment of paleogeographic reconstructions of eastern Gondwana: Bringing geology back into the equation” published in Gondwana Research. The model was also presented by Dr. White at this year’s Roberts Conference at Royal Holloway.
